Certification Requirements

Lifeguard Training

All Recertification Course participants must have a current, unexpired StarGuard Lifeguard certification. For other certification types or expired StarGuard certifications, register for a Lifeguard Certification Course instead.

Initial screening

Participants must be able to perform the following in order to be eligible to take the course:

  • Retrieve a 10-pound weight from the bottom of a 13-foot deep pool.

  • Tread water for one minute without the use of hands.

  • Swim 50 yards freestyle or breaststroke with the head up as if sighting a victim (without a rescue tube).

  • Swim 50 yards freestyle or breaststroke with the head up as if sighting a victim (with a rescue tube).

Our instructors have great tips and tricks to ensure every participant gets a fair shot. A full refund is given to any participant who is not able to pass the Initial Screening tests after assistance from the instructor.

Performance Evaluations

In order to be eligible for certification, participants must demonstrate they now know the proper methods for responding to a variety of emergencies by correctly administering simulated care in eleven performance evaluations:

  •  Six land-based Performance Evaluations to ensure competency in the Basic First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, and Basic Life Support sections of the course.

  • Five water-based Performance Evaluations to ensure competency in the Lifeguarding section of the course.

Written Exam

At the completion of the course, participants must take and pass the following exams:

  • StarGuard Lifeguard exam: Miss no more than 10 of 50 questions (80%).

  • ASHI Emergency Oxygen exam: Miss no more than 2 of 10 questions (80%).

Professional Rescue Equipment Add-Ons

Some employers elect to give their employees all the lifeguarding essentials, such as a hip pack, whistle, or CPR barrier mask. Others don't. Either way, your employer will likely expect you to have each piece of equipment, and it could even be required by law.

Add on the following during registration for easy pickup during your course:

  • CPR Barrier Mask - $12.00

  • Lifeguard Hip Pack - $12.00

  • Fox40 Ultra-Loud Whistle & Lanyard - $8.00

COVID-19 Safety Information

We're following guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the American Heart Association (AHA) to impliment the following changes to course content:

  • Course sizes will be limited to 9 participants.

  • Participants will be required to wear face masks for the duration of the course (except while in the water).

  • Participants will be spaced no closer than six feet apart.

  • Face masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, and handwashing stations will be available at no charge for the duration of the course.

  • Participants will be required to wear gloves when using shared equipment, such as AEDs or BVMs.

  • Participants will be reminded to wash hands before the course, after the course, and before meal or snack breaks.

  • Tables, chairs, mannequins, and all other equipment will be sanitized after each time they come into contact with any participant.

There is no evidence to suggest that coronavirus can spread through properly maintained swimming pool water.
